How to Use Articles in English Grammar

Articles क्या होते हैं?

Articles English grammar में determiners होते हैं, जो nouns (संज्ञा) के पहले आकर यह बताते हैं कि वह noun कितना specific है।

English में तीन articles होते हैं:

1.     A

2.     An

3.     The

इनमें से:

• A और An को Indefinite Articles कहते हैं (मतलब: कोई एक)
• The को Definite Article कहते हैं (मतलब: वही एक खास)

1. Indefinite Articles: A / An

➤ Use of A:

A का प्रयोग तब होता है जब noun का पहला sound (ध्वनि) consonant sound हो (जैसे b, c, d, g, j, etc.)

Examples:

• a boy
• a cat
• a university (‘you’ sound है, vowel होने पर भी consonant sound)
• a European country

➤ Use of An:

An का प्रयोग तब होता है जब noun का पहला sound vowel sound हो (जैसे a, e, i, o, u…)

Examples:

• an apple
• an elephant
• an hour (‘h’ silent है, तो vowel sound शुरू हो रहा है)
• an honest man

Special Note:

Sound (ध्वनि) के अनुसार Article चुना जाता है, spelling के अनुसार नहीं।

Example:

• a university (because the first letter sound starts with a consonant sound “you”)
• an M.L.A. (because the first letter sound starts with the vowel sound “em”)

 2. Definite Article: The

➤ Use of The:

The का प्रयोग किसी खास या विशेष चीज़ के लिए होता है, या जब वह noun पहले से सुनने वाले को पता हो।

Examples:

• The sun rises in the east.
• I saw the movie you recommended.
• The Taj Mahal is beautiful.
• He is the best player in the team.

A / An vs. The: Difference

Article नहीं लगता कब?

कुछ nouns ऐसे होते हैं जिनसे पहले कोई article नहीं आता

Uncountable nouns:

• Water, sugar, rice

I need water. (Correct)

I need a water. (Incorrect)

Plural nouns in general sense:

• Lions are dangerous. (सभी शेर) – Correct.

Proper nouns:

• India, Ahmad, Dubai
  I live in India. (Correct)

  I live in the India. (Correct)
