English Conditionals – Types, Rules, and Examples

सोचिए, अगर ज़िंदगी में ‘if’ शब्द न होता, तो सपनों का क्या होता?
“If I were rich, I would travel the world…”
“If I study hard, I will pass the exam…”
यानी, English Conditionals असल में हमारी ‘what if’ वाली सोच का ज़रिया हैं।

 

English Conditionals क्या हैं?

Conditionals ऐसे sentences हैं, जो ‘if’ की मदद से possibility, dreams, या imaginary situations बताते हैं। ये ऐसे हैं जैसे हम अपनी कहानी में ‘क्या होता अगर…’ का twist डाल रहे हों।

 

Conditionals का Magic:

 

• Zero Conditional – For facts! “If you heat water, it boils.” (Science lover vibe!)
• First Conditional – For real future! “If I work hard, I will get success.”
• Second Conditional – For dreams! “If I had a million dollars, I would buy a private island.” (कितना मजेदार है ना ये सोच?)
• Third Conditional – For regrets or past wishes! “If I had studied, I would have passed.” (सच बताओ, ये line कितनी बार बोली है?)

 

Why are Conditionals fun?
क्योंकि ये हमारी imagination को express करते हैं।

English Conditionals – Explanation

English grammar में Conditionals ऐसे वाक्य होते हैं जो किसी condition (शर्त) और उसके परिणाम (result) को दर्शाते हैं।

 

Conditionals वाक्य आमतौर पर दो हिस्सों में बँटा होता है:

1.     If clause (जहाँ condition दी जाती है)

2.     Main clause (जहाँ result बताया जाता है)

 

Structure:
If + condition (clause), result (main clause)

 

1. Zero Conditional – Universal Truth or Facts

Use: जब कोई चीज़ हमेशा सच होती है या scientific fact हो।

 

Structure:
If + present simple, present simple

 

Examples:

• If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
  (अगर आप पानी को 100°C तक गर्म करते हैं, तो वह उबलता है।)
• If you mix red and blue, you get purple.
  (अगर आप लाल और नीला मिलाते हैं, तो आपको बैंगनी रंग मिलता है।)

 

2. First Conditional – Real Possibility in Future

 

Use: जब कोई बात भविष्य में सच हो सकती है (possible condition)।

 

Structure:
If + present simple, will + base verb

 

Examples:

• If it rains, we will cancel the picnic.
  (अगर बारिश हुई, तो हम पिकनिक रद्द कर देंगे।)
• If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
  (अगर तुम मेहनत से पढ़ाई करोगे, तो परीक्षा पास करोगे।)

 

3. Second Conditional – Unreal or Imaginary Present/Future

Use: जब हम कल्पना करते हैं या किसी असंभव स्थिति की बात करते हैं।

 

Structure:
If + past simple, would + base verb

 

Examples:

• If I had wings, I would fly.
  (अगर मेरे पास पंख होते, तो मैं उड़ता।)
• If she were rich, she would travel the world.
  (अगर वह अमीर होती, तो पूरी दुनिया घूमती।)

 

Note: “If I were” का प्रयोग formal English में होता है, लेकिन spoken English में “If I was” भी चलता है।

 

4. Third Conditional – Unreal Past / Regret

 

Use: जब हम किसी ऐसी चीज़ की बात करते हैं जो past में नहीं हुई, लेकिन हम सोचते हैं अगर होती तो क्या होता।

 

Structure:

If + past perfect, would have + past participle

 

Examples:

• If I had studied, I would have passed the test.
  (अगर मैंने पढ़ाई की होती, तो मैं परीक्षा पास कर लेता।)
• If they had left earlier, they would have caught the train.
  (अगर वे पहले निकलते, तो ट्रेन पकड़ लेते।)

 

5. Mixed Conditional – Past Condition + Present Result (or vice versa)

 

Use: जब past में कुछ हुआ होता तो आज उसका असर होता।

 

Structure:
If + past perfect, would + base verb (now)

 

Example:

• If I had taken that job, I would be living in Dubai now.
  (अगर मैंने वह नौकरी ली होती, तो मैं अभी दुबई में रह रहा होता।)

 

या, जब present unreal condition का past में असर हो:

 

Structure:
If + past simple, would have + past participle

 

Example:

• If I were smarter, I would have solved the problem.
  (अगर मैं ज़्यादा समझदार होता, तो मैं समस्या हल कर लेता।)
